Drawing for Fashion: Traditional Illustration Journey

Project type

Illustration

Date

19 May 2025

Location

San Francisco

Throughout this semester, I focused on building my skills in traditional fashion illustration; developing a strong foundation in hand-drawn techniques and experimenting with a variety of coloring mediums. This portfolio presents a curated selection of 20 pages handpicked by my instructor to showcase my growth, creativity, and technical range. The work reflects ongoing studies in pose, proportion, garment structure, texture, and color application.

Each page captures a different aspect of fashion drawing from expressive gesture sketches and anatomical studies to detailed full-figure illustrations. I explored a wide array of visual styles and techniques, including watercolor washes, ink outlines, and colored pencil layering, to bring each concept to life.

In the final weeks of the course, I created an additional 10 pages of multi-figure compositions, applying everything I’d learned to develop cohesive fashion stories. These drawings reflect my understanding of dynamic group layouts, garment cohesion, and storytelling through silhouette and color.

This body of work marks a significant step in my journey as a designer. It documents my progress in translating design ideas to paper with greater clarity, personality, and purpose, and serves as a visual milestone in my ongoing exploration of fashion.
